Ellie's big girl room

Right before Christmas, we bought a bed frame for Ellie's big girl bed. Over the last 2 months or so, I've worked on gathering items for her big girl room and choosing the paint color. I'd had visions of a pretty blue room with sweet little birdies with maybe some red accents. Well, Ellie told me, "I need PINK on my walls!" So, since you're only 2 once, and with her being our last baby, and I know how quickly they grow up and things have been put into perspective for me on how important some things are (and how not important some things are!).......I decided to let her choose her room color!

Gracie's room is also pink, a light pink, so I wanted a bolder pink. I bought the bedding & some cute owls and wanted a pink to match part of one of the owls. We found pretty much an exact match! Chris opted for the lighter pink, but we went with the bolder one instead. It is VERY pink, may not be everyone's 'cup 'o tea,' but I love it! I love being in there and find it to be a happy little room for our 2 year old!

Below, you will find some "Before & After" pictures.

Watching her sister paint....

The dresser was my grandmother's, and is in need of replacement or repair. I'm leaning towards repair.

I love this big "E" that I found at Home Goods in the clearance aisle. Perfect accessory for her room. I also love the owl lamp!

pretty bracelet Melissa gave her when she was born

the dress she wore home from the hospital

My friend, Kym, painted this cornice board when Katie was born, and it traveled from SC to TX with us. I'm so glad Ellie has the perfect size window for it. I'm going to try to add some more blue to the room in other areas since her bedding doesn't have any in it. I'm determined to keep it because it's special to me. I am debating on adding some sort of curtains and plan to add better blinds at some point. The white rocking horse was Katie's on her 1st birthday and is a great toy for Ellie's room. (although Katie likes to point out that it's hers!)
This rocking chair was my grandmother's also. Very special.
Happy girl!

The birthday dolls my parents are collecting for her.

I love this area of her room....little dress up area!

Happy to play dress up!

Just last night, we added the headboard to her bed....sweet!
I hope my little girl enjoys many happy moments in her big girl room! It's not a big room, but it's a sweet little room.

Our girls

We're moving right along in our lives here in the Shanks family. Always something going on.
Let's start with our latest big purchase. A new garage door. For obvious reasons. *sigh*
On to happier things....the girls!
Gracie
My baby girl is doing great in 5th grade. She is involved in student council; choir; Read, Deed, Run; serves on her school's 'No Place for Hate' committee, taking violin, and just finished reading Revelations in preparation for being in Bible Bowl for Leadership Training for Christ. She'll also be doing puppets, drama, art, & choir for LTC. All this and still pulling straight A's on her report cards. I told her if she can complete elementary school with all A's (so far, so good) it might be worth some Vera Bradley. That's her kind of language...and will be well deserved! We filled out her course selection sheet for Junior High (gulp!) We signed her up for all Pre AP courses, with orchestra as her elective. She is such a good student in so many ways. Makes this ex-teacher very proud!
She is also a very sweet big sister! Not so much with Katie (heehee) but with Ellie, she is a dream! She is such a big helper...and often without being asked. She just helps on instinct. She does help Katie, too, but they just tend to butt heads more often.
She is a bit in the "Mom! You're embarrassing me!" phase and can have a bit of an attitude, but all in all, she is such a wonderful daughter, and we're very proud of her! She has a quiet, gentle spirit, and we love her!
2011 Science Fair project (apparently, Scott paper towels are the most absorbent!)
Some of her artwork we saw in the school hallway when we were there for the Science Fair.
We went to the Home & Garden Show, and I was thrilled to meet Frank (from Trading Spaces)!
Katie

What can we say about Katie? She's a mess, but SO much fun! I snapped some pictures of her t.v. watching pose the other day.

And we wonder why she gets hurt.....speaking of, the other day, I had a message from the school nurse saying that Katie had gotten hit in the nose with a ball at recess (thrown up in the air by Katie, we discovered later!) Given her history with a broken nose, the nurse wanted to call me rather than just sending home a note. It does appear to have had some bruising & swelling from it, but hopefully it will be okay! I don't want to go through nose surgery again!
I am constantly amazed at her often zany outlook on life. The way her mind works is amazing. She told me the other day when it was her cousin, Sara Jane's birthday. I asked how she knew it, and she said SJ had told her at Christmas when her birthday was, and apparently she remembered. Likely, she wrote it on her calendar. If it has to do with numbers, she can do it. You can tell her how many days it is until a certain activity, and she'll know each day how many more days it is. She loves reading, too! She took off with that as soon as she learned. She's following in her sister's footsteps at being a great student! She is very excited that she's going to be playing softball again this Spring, too! She recently learned the 12 Tribes of Israel for Bible Class, and absorbs a lot of what she learns in Bible Class and likes to take a turn reading from the Bible when we do it as a family. Our preacher has fill in the blanks for his sermons each Sunday, and she will fill them in. The other day, she didn't have a bulletin, but she copied almost all of it off the screen anyway, the fill in the blanks as well as the other parts. I know she doesn't understand all of it yet, but she will if she keeps doing that!
She still struggles with her allergies and recently had a check up with the allergist where we agreed to keep going with the shots and try some new medications/treatments to help. Poor thing!
The girl is full of personality and passionately feels each & every emotion she feels. Happy is very happy. Sad is very sad. Tired is basically passing out wherever she falls (& is DEAD WEIGHT when trying to carry her up the stairs! LOL) She is our cuddle bug, and loves to hug & kiss & cuddle. She is a packrat!!!!! I tell her that her room is kind of like 'Sanford & Son,' maybe 'Hoarders,' too.

We missed the snow a few weeks ago, but we got some small icicles on the garage!

Ellie
Ellie is 2 years old, and it is obvious! She is also full of personality, sometimes it's a happy, friendly one. Sometimes, it's a cranky, "leave me alone" one. One of her latest things is to say, "I don't LIKE __________." This usually happens at meal times. Last night, I made an Italian chicken dish in the crockpot. She LOVED it & gobbled it up...cleaned her plate...and had 2 helpings for lunch today. Success! We are working on potty training a bit. She likes to say that she needs to go potty and to go sit on the potty; there's just not usually a lot of success surrounding it. It will come in time. I'm not too concerned about it. She's my 3rd one. The other 2 have eventually gotten it, and I'm sure she will, too.
She has some favorite men at church. I love seeing her have these relationships. It is truly one of the special things about being part of a church family. I can't imagine not having that.
She is a goofy, fun 2 year old!

The girl loves Noah! Our VBS last year was Noah, and she is pretty much obsessed with him. The other day I asked her who loved her, and she said, "Jesus." I asked who else (thinking she would say God.) She said, "Noah." She then said God as the next person. So, in our house, not only do God & Jesus love Ellie, but Noah does as well!
One day, she was very upset when she found her "Noah" in the trash can. He had to be rescued (and I explained that it was indeed Jesus, not Noah!)
I love this Sleeping Beauty pose, or as one friend put it, "Sleeping Booty!" LOL

It may seem weird, but I like taking her to HEB with me. It's fun to talk to her as I go through the aisles. She always wants to see the "Monsters," a.k.a. Lobsters. It sounds like Monsters when she says Lobsters.
THIS is another reason to love taking her to HEB with me....close parking space!
She enjoyed playing the drums one morning.
picking up the girls from school

She's a ham....but a cute one!

We are so blessed with our girls!

Thankful that God heals

So last week, Gracie was sick. I know, I know......our kids are always sick. UGH Honestly, I do think it's getting better than it was, but yes, they do tend to pick up things pretty easily & share their germs with each other. We are thankful for each well day we have and have taken more than 1 step towards helping them be healthier. I'm (kind of ) done with beating myself up over it. Yes, I still inwardly cringe when I feel like people are raising their eyebrows at us and wondering what in the world we're doing wrong. However, I have come to terms with the fact that some children are just more susceptible to being sick, and it doesn't necessarily mean we're doing something "wrong." Anyway.......

Last Monday, I noticed Gracie seemed a bit puny, but I didn't say anything to her because for a few days I'd kept asking her if she felt okay, and she kept insisting that she did. She'd been coughing some and her voice sounded funny, like her throat was swollen, but she kept insisting (between some eye rolls I'm sure) that she felt fine. However, when she sat down to breakfast, she turned puny eyes to me and said she didn't feel like eating. *bingo* She said she felt icky & weak. Gracie is not one to complain much, so I knew she was sick. I called Chris & we agreed that she should stay home from school. Like I said, she's not one to complain much or try to get out of going to school, so we can trust when she says she doesn't feel well.

She rested on Monday and by the time we went to pick up Katie from school, I was thinking I should take her in to the doctor (which of course means taking the other 2 in with me!) I looked in her throat while waiting in carline for Katie and decided the 2 sides of her throat aren't supposed to be meeting, soooo....I called & made an appointment and drove straight to the doctor after getting Katie.

Poor thing was shivering in the doctor's office because of her fever and tested positive for strep. The doctor felt she might have the flu also, but we didn't test for it. So, we felt that with her antibiotic, she'd bounce back pretty quickly, and I confidently took her doctor's note releasing her to go back to school on Wednesday.

Tuesday, she rested and her voice still sounded weird and she may have run a bit of fever. Tuesday night, she seemed a little bit better but we decided she should stay home again on Wednesday because of the fever she'd had that morning and to continue resting. Gracie is the healthiest of our children, I'd say, as far as not having routine allergies and getting frequent sniffles, etc., but when she gets hit, she gets hit hard, so we figured it would benefit her to stay home again. Her teacher was being really sweet & understanding about her make up work, saying that they'd take care of it when she felt better, so I wasn't too worried about that.

Wednesday morning, she woke up feeling horrible! Worse than the day before. She was kind of moaning and had a fever of almost 103. Ugh. We took Katie to school, and she went straight back to bed when we got back home. Over 2 hours later, I went to check on her. She seemed to feel a bit better but still quite sick. Later in the afternoon, I looked in her throat (this is after 4 doses of antibiotic) and it was still pretty swollen and I also noticed that the front of her throat was swollen as well. It was apparent that it was hard for her to swallow (although she kept telling me it didn't hurt). Chris agreed to come home to try to get Katie & Ellie in time for me to get Gracie back to the doctor because something just didn't seem right to me. She felt truly horrible. I ended up meeting Chris in the parking lot of the doctor's office, and he took Ellie and went to pick up Katie from school.

When we got into the office, her fever was 102 something (I think....) & they tested her for the flu (which was negative). However, the doctor said she was concerned that she might have an absess in her throat. (ewww) She said we needed to either get into an ENT that afternoon or head to the ER at Texas Children's. That concerned me! She came back & said she'd gotten us into an ENT, and we were supposed to go over there right then.

So......off we went. The pediatrician had said sometimes they can treat an absess in the office but sometimes it requires hospitalization. She then said to just listen to what they had to say and something along the lines of not freaking out (since she could tell I was on my way to that point...lol)

We got to the ENT and had to wait a little while with Gracie just barely making it, she felt so bad. She's not a complainer, but you could just tell she felt so bad. We got into the exam room and the ENT was really nice (found out later she is one used for years by a friend of mine for herself & her kids, so that was comforting). She immediately upon exam ruled out an absess, so THAT was good! She was concerned about her swollen lymph nodes though and was thinking she might actually have mono! With a child like Gracie, who gets hit hard when sick, I did NOT want this to be a reality. I know that can make some people so incredibly sick for such a long time, so I was envisioning a bad few months ahead of us, not to mention the contagiousness of it regarding the other girls.

So, we went over to the nearby hospital (which wasn't my choice of hospital, but since we were just going for blood work, we went. Had she been hospitalized, I would have pushed to be sent to a different one.) She had the blood work drawn, and we headed home. Chris & the other girls had gone to church, so she & I just hung out alone at home until they got home. She agreed to have a Wendy's Frosty and would drink water, but that was about all she would 'eat.' The dr. had indicated that she may be able to call with the mono results that night, but that didn't end up being the case. I gave her a shower & washed her hair, and we put her to bed. Around her eyes was soooo dark. I'm not sure if that was from the fever or what??? Poor thing.

Thursday morning, Chris stayed home since it was my day to go into the office. She actually ended up getting up on her own and seemed to actually feel a bit better, oddly enough. She said her throat still hurt a little bit (she had finally said it did hurt some). I went on to work, anxious to get done (since we were expecting SNOW later in the day). lololol...that never showed up! Chris called shortly after I got to work, saying that the dr. had called and said the mono test was negative! Yea!!!!!!!!! There was a chance that it could be positive later, but she didn't feel like it would based upon the initial test. She said the tests indicated it was something viral and to finish her antibiotic for the previously diagnosed strep and to watch her to make sure she doesn't have trouble swallowing, etc.

Ellie & I came home Thursday afternoon, after grocery shopping, to a Gracie feeling much better, although still coughing and now having a very sniffly nose, but much better than she had been. It's only gotten better since then! Poor thing was so sick, but thankfully, she is on the mend. Much to her disappointment, we told her she had to take a nap this afternoon, but she definitely needs rest to hopefully be up to a full week of school this week!

Thursday evening, we 'hunkered down' at home, with Taco Soup & a fire, waiting for all the snow that had been forecast. School had already been cancelled for Friday (which helped with Gracie's absences!). We played a game of Apples to Apples. Well, all except Ellie. She kept messing up the cards, so she had to go to bed! LOL Gracie was already feeling quite a bit better, and we saw some hope at the end of whatever it was she had! We are thankful to God for helping her recover!

Alas, Friday morning, we woke up to no snow! :( Some ice in parts of Houston, but no snow (& not much ice) around our area.

Ellie & Gracie posed for a smiley Friday morning picture. After all, it was nice to be able to stay home and relax from school, even if there was no snow. It was really cold, so it was nice to be home & warm. Katie was in no mood for a happy picture that morning. She'd gone to bed with visions of building snow castles & snow families in her head. :(

We didn't do a whole lot of anything that day...which was nice. Gracie enjoys a fire like her Mommy does, and did some drawing that night.

Saturday morning, I snapped this sweet picture of my oldest & youngest, relaxing on the couch. Poor Katie was kicked off. Poor middle child. :(

Speaking of Katie, I loved this little project she brought home from school. Wednesday was the 100th Day of School, which is a big thing for a 1st grader. :) This shows that when Katie is 100 years old, she will have her Mickey blanket! I made it for her when she turned 3, and she adores it. I love that she loves it so much!
Here is Katie when she first got her Mickey blanket!

A Friend Loves At All Times

Last Thursday, 1/20/11, I left for a trip to Aiken to visit Melissa & Mary Beth! :) I even took Cindy with me since she's gotten to be friends with them, too! I love for my "new" friends to meet my "old" friends & get to love them, too! :)

It was difficult leaving with Ellie being sick, but Chris, being the wonderful husband he is, insisted that I still go and not worry about things. If she'd been admitted to the hospital, obviously I wouldn't have gone but she was home & on the mend, so I went. Of course, had I known that on Saturday, Chris would wake up with it, I might have rethought the plan. OOPS!

Anyhoo..........so, here's the run down of this fun trip!

Thursday, 1/20/11

After I finished my usual Thursday work at the office, I ran home to get in some cuddle time with my sweet Ellie. She was already feeling better although still quite puny. I was exhausted after sleeping very little the night before when she was in the hospital but was kind of going on adrenaline. Cindy was actually leaving Houston before me with plans for us to meet in Dallas. We ended up meeting at the airport here but then she left on an earlier plane. It worked out nicely because I didn't have a ton of time in between flights, so she found out where our next flight was and had dinner waiting for me in Dallas! I kind of liked having a personal travel assistant. LOL

We enjoyed the flight from Dallas to Augusta, talking the whole time. (The steward was interesting.) I think both of us understood why little babies cry in airplanes since our ears were stopping up & killing us as we landed. Not sure what that was about!
I texted Mary Beth as soon as we landed, but then she & Melissa were nowhere to be found in the airport. We ended up being there 28 minutes early and they weren't planning to be there early which meant they ended up getting there late!!!!!!! I said we could just take a cab, whatever. hahaha

Cindy enjoyed posing in the airport as we waited.

Once they got there, the happy reunion began!

Our first picture together for this trip!

Of course, Melissa had everything looking pretty and warm chocolate chip cookies just being taken out of the oven by her hubby! Yummy!

Here's my roommate for the weekend-my Mary Beth! :)

Friday, 1/21/11

We enjoyed a yummy breakfast of "Orange Walnut Sunrise Coffee Cake." I think that's the name of it.......I always forget the name of it, but it doesn't really matter....still yummy!

After we ate & were all ready, we headed out to shop Aiken and enjoy being together. Aiken is really a cute little town with lots of character.

We took lots of pictures! :)

Me & my 'bronco driving friend'!

Lunch at Takosushi!

I like to pick friends who are good cooks 'cause you know....that just benefits me. :) I hit the JACKPOT with Melissa! Man..........she is a Southern Belle and a skinny Paula Deen all rolled into one! :)

She cooked an awesome dinner Friday night and Mary Beth's husband & son joined us. Her sweet daughter, Summer, joined us for a bit beforehand.
(I also got to meet her new boyfriend....so sweet!!!!!!!)

Melissa cooked this Italian chicken crockpot dish that is so yummy, served over pasta. We also had these green beans that I love, along with Parmesan knots (that I have to say she got the recipe from me! heehee) Love them! There are no words to describe the salad she made except awesome, good, wonderful, amazing, etc., etc., etc. It was soooooooooo good! There is a salad at a restaurant here in Houston called, "Warm Goat Cheese Salad" that we love, so she put her own spin on it and hit the nail on the head! It was so good! Not only did it taste good, but it was also pretty! It had mixed greens, chopped Granny Smith apples, blueberries, slices of goat cheese, and honey with pepper in it. (I may not have all of that right.)

Here is the cake she made. Of course, all of this was made with the assistance of Mary Beth...must give her credit where credit is due! :) I don't remember what it was called, but it was dark chocolate with cheesecake stuffed inside of it and cream cheese icing. Who really cares what it was called?! It was just good!

Here is Melissa's son & Mary Beth's son, along with Melissa's little doggy! Gracie & Hunter (MB's son) were in Kindergarten & 1st grade together...big buddies! Gracie & Avery have been friends from church since she was 9 months & he was almost 2 months!

Here are my sweet friends with their sweet hubbies! They treat me like a sister, but I still love them anyway! :) They both were very gracious & kind this weekend to allow their wives to spend so much time away from the family. Shawn was seen many times standing at the sink, washing dishes. Good man!

Here are Melissa's sweet girls! Tatum is one of Katie's BFFs and Karsen & Gracie are buddies as well! Friends forever!
Karsen & Tatum were kind to give us manicures. My fingernails glow in the dark! Ooh la la!
We went to watch Brett play a little basketball & meet some of Mary Beth's friends, then we came back home to hot chocolate (cause it was cooooold out there!) dessert & played a game. We hadn't had the cake before we left, so we were looking forward to it! Well, one of us sampled the cake before we left & again when we got back. I'll never tell who........

Saturday, 1/22/11
We enjoyed breakfast again...this time, homemade (Paula Deen!) blueberry muffins. We then headed to North Augusta & Augusta to do a little more looking & shopping. We ended up at Bistro 491 for lunch. It was really yummy. Melissa & I had eaten there years ago, so since we were in the area & hungry, we tried it again. It didn't disappoint.

Cindy wanted some shrimp & grits. They looked good!
After a long day of shopping at multiple places and some purchases made....some less embarrassing than others...hee,hee...we ended up at Bonefish Grill for a late dinner. Alissa, a friend I've made many memories with, LOTS of playgroups spent together, was able to join us! It'd been 2 years since I'd seen her! So, that was good!
Mary Beth had been spending the night with us at Melissa's, but her son was kind of missing her, so she went home to spend the night that night and go to church with her family the next morning.
Sunday, 1/23/11
Here we are, missing Mary Beth, before church. How many pictures did Shawn take before we got 1 that was decent?! LOL

It was nice to go back to Aiken Church of Christ where we attended for almost 7 years. Of course, LOTS has changed, but it was nice to go back. I found myself sitting there, thinking of times past and feeling a bit sentimental about it. People tease me about not being much of a hugger or not crying easily, but that certainly doesn't mean I don't sometimes want to. I consider myself quite sentimental & nostalgic; I'm just not likely to express it....except maybe in my blog! ;)
That afternoon, we enjoyed a great lunch by Melissa. Mary Beth joined us again. She made this great beef & vegetable soup in the crock pot, along with these amazing grilled cheese dippers. Those things were awesome and will probably be made by me this weekend! They were so good & easy, too!
After lunch, of course we ended up shopping again. haha We then went to church and enjoyed dinner at Atlanta Bread Company with a group mainly from church. It was nice to have that time to visit longer than we'd had that morning.

Cindy was starting to miss Aaron! LOL

That night, we stayed up LATE, planning our trip to NYC in April! Yippee!
Monday, 1/24/11
This morning, we got Gorilla Bread! Like Melissa said, God bless Paula Deen! :) One of my favorites to make!
It was kind of a bittersweet morning. Cindy & I were missing our families, but we were sad to leave the girls' weekend behind. It is simply amazing to have such good girlfriends and a blessing indeed from God to place these girls in my life. Not really any words to do it complete justice. It is just something I consider a true blessing, and I pray I bless them as much as they bless me!
Melissa, who is NOT a diet Coke addict, found it a bit ridiculous to find these 3 cans in Mary Beth's car. I think this is a funny picture!
"A Friend Loves At All Times!" Proverbs 17:17a

Cindy & I ended up with a 3 1/2 hour layover in Atlanta, so my mom came to the airport and treated us to lunch! We both also got some goodies for our home out of the deal! :) I don't know anyone who is much more of an antique lover/flea market digger/garage sale fan than my mom which usually means that my collection of certain dishes is ever growing! :) I hadn't seen my mom since September, so it was good to see her, even if just for a little more than an hour. I wish Dad could have come as well.

It was a great weekend!!!!!!!!!! I am soooo thankful for my amazing husband who willingly & happily encouraged me to go on this trip and didn't even make me feel bad when he ended up being sick while I was gone. I felt bad, but he is a true trooper and wanted me to enjoy this time. I love him!
